Welcome to Mt. Titlis, the highest viewpoint in Central Switzerland!
Not only can you stand with your feet on a glacier, but you can ride in a revolving cable car, explore an ice cave, walk on Europe’s highest suspension bridge, and enjoy plenty of adventures at the stops below.

If we haven’t met, we’re Jana and Brett, Aplins in the Alps, and we help you travel Switzerland with confidence. And today we’re giving you a complete guide to Mt. Titlis and Trübsee near Engelberg, Switzerland.
Want to Watch instead of Read?
Glacier Cave
When you arrive at Titlis you’ll be on the first of five levels full of activities, and we suggest heading straight to the Glacier Cave. Once inside, you’re walking 10 meters below the surface of a 5000 year old glacier! The path is 150 meters long, and you’ll probably spend just a few minutes wandering around and admiring the ice sculptures. As you can imagine, it’s cold in here, so be sure to wear a warm jacket.

We’ve been on multiple glaciers, but we’ve only been beneath a glacier once and that was at Matterhorn Glacier Paradise in Zermatt. It’s still amazing to me that we can do this and that it’s somehow safe.
Now let’s head outside into the sunshine for our next activity.
Titlis Cliff Walk
Be brave and cross the Titlis Cliff Walk! While you sway in the thin air on Europe’s highest suspension bridge cross confidently to the other side.

This thrill is open every day and year round, but since we’re ‘snow’ high in elevation, you’ll always see snow no matter when you visit!. And it does sway back and forth more than I expected.
Once you reach the other side, you’re greeted by our next activity, the Ice Flyer.
Ice Flyer

This glacier chair lift might be one of the most spectacular rides you’ll take in Switzerland. You slowly glide over the glacier and can see deep down into the bright blue crevasses below. This runs daily, but only in good weather.
This chairlift costs 12 francs and there are no discounts offered, except that it’s totally free with the Tell-Pass, which we’ll share more about later. In the Winter, the chairlift takes you to the ski slopes, but we’re here in the Summer and it’s strategically dropping us off at our next activity.
Glacier Park
Welcome to the Glacier Park! From mid-May to the end of July, depending on snow conditions, you can enjoy some action packed snow sports like sledding and snow tubing.
Which reminds me, you’ll want a good pair of waterproof shoes so you don’t slip on the snow or get your feet soaking wet. By the way, once you have your ticket for the Ice Flyer, these activities are totally free, so there’s no reason not to have some fun.

It’s amazing to be able to spend so much time on a glacier while you’re up here at Titlis. But these activities have worked up quite the appetite, so I think it’s time for a snack. Let’s ride the chair lift back to the station to go find some food.
Restaurants at Titlis
You can picnic in the Panorama Lounge on the fourth floor of the station, or enjoy a meal in one of the two restaurants.
You can also walk a short distance across the glacier to the Panorama Terrace. Chill out at one of the many picnic tables or lounge chairs, but make sure to bring sunscreen and sunglasses to safely soak in these high altitude views.

If you have a sweet tooth like Brett, then you can make a beeline to the Lindt Chocolate Shop or the Mövenpick Ice Cream Bar. Besides food, you can shop for a Swiss watch, visit the photo studio to get your picture taken wearing traditional Swiss costumes, or even snap a few fun selfies to add to your vacation scrapbook.

It’s been a blast to explore, but there’s still way more to do down below. While we enjoy the ride down with 360 degree views, let’s talk about how to get up here.
How to Reach Titlis & Titlis Ticket Prices
From the Engelberg train station, ride the free shuttle or walk ten minutes to reach the valley station, then ride the Titlis Xpress gondola from Engelberg to Stand. Here, you’ll change to the world’s first revolving cable car. During this five minute ride, your cabin will slowly make one rotation so you have a chance to see the entire landscape of rocks and ice fields and crevasses, at more than 3000m in elevation.

This entire ride from Engelberg to Titlis takes around 30 minutes and is open daily from 8:30a.m. to 5:00p.m. except for in bad weather, and for a few weeks of maintenance in November.

In 2025, an adult round trip ticket costs 102 CHF. You get 50% off with the Half Fare Card, Swiss Travel Pass, and Berner Oberland Pass. And you get a 25% discount with the Eurail and Interrail Passes. But the best option is the Tell-Pass, which allows you to ride up to Titlis (and pretty much everywhere else you’ll want to visit in Central Switzerland) for completely free!
Kids under 6 ride for free, and kids 6 to 15 pay half price, or are completely free with the Swiss Family Card. And your dog can also ride up with you for just 15 CHF.
Let the adventures continue to Trübsee!
Things to do in Trübsee

Today we’re starting with Trübsee Adventure! This free spot is included in your ticket, so why not jump, bounce and balance! The Bag Jump Tower lets you climb 3, 4, or 6m up the tower before you plunge onto the air bag below. And the trampoline is right next door where you can bounce from the trampoline onto another air bag.

This adventure area is free of charge, which is super awesome. It’s open daily in good weather from May through October from 1:00 to 5:00pm. However, you must be at least six years old to play here. But don’t worry, there are other playgrounds for little kids here too.
You can also fly down from here to the lake on a 500 meter zipline. Ride by yourself or side by side with a partner for just 16 francs per person, and the zipline ends at the lake where your adventures continue.

Although this is a tiny lake, there are six rowboats available. And this is super cool — they’re actually self-service, kind of like the farm fridges in the mountains. You just drop your money in the box, grab a life jacket, and then hop on board for a relaxing ride. Now, like all of the other activities, this is available daily from June through October in good weather.

Okay, there’s still more to explore here at Trübsee! But first, it’s lunchtime.
Restaurants at Trübsee
Believe it or not, there are about six different restaurants in or near Trübsee, and some of them are conveniently located right near the station, while a few are dotted along the hiking trails and some are even guesthouses too. We had a hard time choosing where to eat, so we’ll list all of the options below. But ultimately, we ended up at Restaurant Alpstubli for the hearty Swiss classic food and phenomenal lake views.

These are the other restaurants you can choose from:
- Trübsee Self-Service Restaurant
- Trübsee Bistro
- Lago Torbido
- Restaurant Alpstubli
- Restaurant Untertrübsee
- Gasthaus Gerschnialp – Café Ritz
Hiking from Trübsee
Eating is a perfect opportunity to talk about hikes you can do near Trübsee. Why is that? Because the more you hike the more calories you need to consume.
You could follow the 1-hour trail from Trübsee to the Stäubi Waterfall that’s dripping with glacier water!

Or opt for the 1-hour loop around the lake. This is a flat, gravel path so it’s easily walkable for anyone, including families with strollers.

If you love the beauty of alpine lakes, then add the 4 Lakes Hike to your itinerary! It starts at Trübsee and ends in Melchsee-Frutt, passing 4 stunning alpine lakes along the way. It’s marked at around 11km and takes about four hours. And from the end in Melchsee-Frutt, you can take the cable car down to Stöckalp, ride a bus to Sarnen, and then train back to Engelberg.
And in addition to hiking, there are also more than 150km of mountain biking routes in this area as well.
Family and Kid Activities at Trübsee
If you have kids of any age, you’ll definitely want to check out Schmuggli’s Family Paradise. This whole area is themed around the character of Engelbert the smuggler and his mule, Schmuggli. Together they traveled over the Jochpass to Italy — but left a few hidden treasures for your kids to discover along the way.

First is the Trübsee Alpine Lodge restaurant, which also has a special Schmuggli’s kids’ buffet for kids under 12 years old. If the weather isn’t great, there’s an indoor playroom. But of course you’re hoping for blue skies, which is why there’s a great playground nearby!

Seriously, Switzerland is an amazing place to be a kid! This playground near the lake has picnic areas, grill spots with free wood, and toilets too. For kids below age ten, follow the one hour Treasure Hunt gravel trail around Trübsee Lake.

Older kids will prefer the hour and a half Sbrinz Trail. On both of those routes, your kids can stop at a handful of stations to solve puzzles and win prizes.

The Sbrinz trail conveniently ends at Untertrübsee where you can visit the alpine cheese dairies or you can even ride a trottibike back down to Engelberg! These are available daily from May to October and cost eight francs per person, but you have to be at least ten years old and 1.2m (5 feet) tall.
